truck dies intermintently

my 96 supercab 302`w/4r70w , dies everyonce in a while when coming to a stop or sometimes while slowing down to make a turn. when coming to a stop i can feel the trans vibrating like its trying to down shift. ive had the trans serviced a couple times in the last 6 years. i searched the forum but couldnt really find anything like this...although my trans does shift hard from 1st to 2nd under light acceleration. also under cruising speed 30-45mph it feels like i am running over ripples in the road like its slipping or hunting for OD. from my knowledge the trans filter has never been replaced, but ive heard you dont want to change them for one reason or another....is this something i should do? is there a way to just drain the convertor?

sorry for the long rambling...im ready to burn this thing to the ground\

any help would be great

Does the speedometer work OK and does not jump?

Sounds like it could be the VSS sensor or PSOM and not the transmission.

I don't know why you wouldn't want to change the trans filter.

Check the tranny oil. If it's black, it needs to be changed. Red or reddish/brown is okay. Fresh oil and a new filter really improved the shifting on my truck. Usually the filter is sold with a pan gasket as well. I had a hard shift between 1+2, and still do, but it's not nearly as bad after fresh oil.

I dunno about the 70w box, but the E4OD has a magic number of what I've found to be 39-40 to engage overdrive. Like if I'm coasting downhill at about that speed, it'll hunt between 3 and 4. Seems normal, just not as advanced as newer trannys.

The converter can be drained on some boxes, and not others. Some have a drain plug and others don't.

Add a can of TransTune to your trans.3-4 days before you change fluid. Helps restore flow through fluid passages & cooling coil & holds contaminants in suspension for drainout. Don't get residue on you when draining, it reeeeeeally stinks.
