'94 F-150 Irratic Idle
Hello fellas, hope you don't mind a Chevy guy asking Ford questions?
My father has a 1994 F-150 with the 5.0. Recently it has started having an irratic idle upon start up (both warm and cold). I was wondering if you guys might be able to help us diagnosis this problem. I am thinking it needs a tune up (which I will do either way), but from the Chevy camp, I know that there are some sensors to check for adjustment (I'm a carb guy
) on fuel injected vehicles. So what sensors and what values need to be checked? Thanks for the help guys.
I am also heading to your FAQ to see what info this site may have available to us.

With age, comes wisdom, and your dad has shown his by owning a Ford, LOL, only kidding!! You're right in "searching" for his idle/running problems here in the archives. That particular question has been asked many, many times. Along with your complete tuneup(wires, plugs, filters), the Air Idle Valve Control usually needs a good cleaning. It is located on the right side of the Throttle bores. If you're careful, you can get lucky and reuse the gasket. It has two screws that attach it. Remove and scrub up the spring loaded plunger. It'll have black suet all along and inside of it. You can also clean up the throttle bores and the butterflys using a mild cleaner and an old toothbrush works great for scrubbing it all up. That, along with a thorough tune-up should help or fix the problem. There are about 5 main sensors that you can check and I know of none that are adjustable, just replacable, lol. See what the tune-up and scrub job does. If not, then repost with what you did and what it is still doing. There are many helpful guys/gals here to help. Enjoy this site!
