Idle Knock
I have light knock at idle since my truck had about 70k on it. It now has 130k and it's still there. I took the belt off still does it. My freinds Ford makes the same noise can be herd from pas. side we both have 351w mine is a 92 and his is a 93. Is this a common problem?
What year is your truck , which transmission ?
I have what may be the same problem.
On mine it sounds like a cross between a knock and a rattle. It is sounds loudest when you stand outside the truck on the drivers side.
Knock is worse when engine is hot.
I used a broom handle to listen to various parts of the truck . It's coming from the transmission. Seems loudest about 3 inches above the transmission oil pan.
I just had the torque converter replaced and fluid/filter . Did not solve problem.

I have a 92 Supercab Shortbox 4X4 with the 302 and AOD. It has 58K miles. I hear a light knock as well, but it is so light I haven't even really paid any attention. I change the oil every 3K miles (5W30 as Ford recommends even though I think its light) and had the transmission oil and filter done at 50K miles. The engine is smooth and powerful and doesn't use any oil.

Mine has a rattle and a knock also. The rattle seems like it's comming from the front of the motor and the knock from down low. I think at idle there is less oil pressure giving less cusion to the bearings. I'm not to worried about it, since it's had it for over 50k, the truck runs great. I just noticed it on a lot of older Ford trucks including straight 6's. Maybe the stock oil pump doesn't put out the pressure needed at idle. I added some STP didn't seem to help.

WOW, I thought I was the only one that heard this on my engine. I have a 96 F150 with e the 4R70W transmission, with the 302. I only hear mine at idle. I have 91k on the motor, doesn't use a drop of oil at all and it still runs strong, ya know I was thinking the same thing about....(maybe the stock oil pump just isn't strong enough at idle?) Well I feel much better now, knowing that I am not the only one. But I am gonna take good care of her.
Does it happen all the time or just idle?
My wifes Tempo had a knock...a loud knock continuous. That perticular knock was the flywheel warping.

Well you can add me to list of people with this sound. I dont think it is anyting to wory about. I have a '92 F-150 with a 351W and 94k(see sig below) and the engine runs perfect. To me it sounds like a rocker arm knocking but nothing seems to be wrong. If you are that worried about it then go to your local Ford dealer and have them check it out.

My mother has an 88' Towncar (302 motor-44,000 miles) that has had an idle knock since day one. Runs fine, though. My truck (96'F150 65,000 miles 302)is whisper quiet at idle though, but the motor does shake a bit. I had a friend with an 88' Bronco with the 302 and his knocked, too. Just one of those things, I guess.

I have a '95 302 and it sometimes "taps" at idle. Usually when still cool. Sometimes very light, sometimes a little worse. Goes away off idle and/or as the engine warms.
They got rid of this problem with the 5.4 and replaced it with piston slap!
