Post Hard shift into 2nd E4OD

My 94's E4OD tranny suddenly started shifting noticably harder into 2nd gear. It has 61,000 miles and I had the filter and fluid changed at 59,000. The other shifts are smooth and the fluid level seems fine. Is this a sign of big trouble around the corner?

my '90 does the same thing except a hars slip right before it catches second, shifting manually it's fine. 160,000 on it, from what i hear amazing for an early e4od.

I have a E4od in my 93, I blew the odo fuse awile back, and drove home with out it hooked up. I know exactly what your going through. Rough as He** isn't it!

You might want to check in the fuse box to see if a fuse from the tranny is blown.

Mine is doing the same thing. I don't know for how long but I got the trans rebuilt las Aug and it still didn't stop. I'm thinking of trying a B&M Shift-Plus to see if it helps any. It's fine under light throttle and around turns but heavy acceleartion and it really kicks. I'll check the fuse box though, I haven't heard that one. Thanks

Thanks, I'll check the fuses. That could be it since it happened suddenly. Since I bought the truck used, I'm a little paranoid about it.

Had the same problem on my 93. It would shift like a garbage truck into second during normal driving but wasn't bad when accelerating quickly off the line. Turns out the E40D goes into a "performance" mode if the computer is receiving any codes. My problem was a bad Lever Positioning Shift sensor. Cost $75 part and labor

Thats what I would assume it is (sensor). I have heard of alot of E40d's that have underwent rebuilds because of bad shifting, especially Powerstrokes. I am not sure if during a rebuild the rebuilder puts new sensors in. I would say start with sensors. You might get a code reader and check the codes.

I just talked to a dealer about the shift problem, and they said it was probably the transmision range sensor. It's only about $25 for the E4OD but $90 for the 4R70W so I'm saving my money to try that.

nate955l,
Are you going to try to replace the sensor yourself? If you do, I'd be interested in what you had to do. I'm afraid that $25.00 part will become $75.00 plus labor if I have it done by a tranny shop.

Tim,
I hope I can. I posted a question about it in the trans section, but no replies yet. I'll probably call the dealer to find out where it is on the tranny. I'll let you know what I find out though.

I have had the same problem with m 96' with the 4R70W. I always thought it to be a characteristic of the trans. I would be anxious to know if it is a sensor, but if it is, why would it only do it from 1-2nd shift? I think it has something to do with the internal line pressure, which builds faster upon hard acceleration

The weirdest thing happened yesterday. That hard shift just stopped doing it after all this time. The shift is pretty slushy but it's not banging. Hopefully that's a good sign and not a bad one. I'll see how it does this weekend. I got a long trip coming up. I just remembered, this weekend I was doing some detail work under the hood and I took out the battery for about an hour. I'm wondering now if that may have reset the computer completely this time. I've done it before with just taking off the pos. and it didn't do anything. Anyway I'll let you know. You may want to try taking off the + & - for a while to reset it.

nate955l,

Could it be that easy. I'm going to give that a try myself.

Well, it's been over a week and it's still better than before, unless the a/c is on(which is only when my wife's there, that's why I didn't notice before) Anyway, it's a firm shift still but not a really hard "clunk". I was thinking about the sensor, and if that was it, why just 1st to 2nd? I'm thinking about the line pressure Rich mentioned above. Is there anyway to adjust that?
How did the battery work out for you Tim?

Unhooking the battery didn't do a thing. Even if it had worked, the cause of the original problem would still have been there. I'm living with it for the moment as it's not a clunk, just a very firm shift. I'll probably take it to the tranny shop as $ become available.
