Question How do I find out about my truck/egr problem

I need to learn more about the 1988 2wd long bed extended cab v8? F-150 my Mom gave me. I have the vin number. Where can I run that or learn for example what engine is in it. I see no label in the engine compartment.

I also have an egr problem. How in the #$@@ do I tighten the nut on the tube that goes into the exhause mainfold fromt the egr?

Thanks!

The only Vin decoder I know of is on www.ford-trucks.com. 1988-and older V-8's didn't state the engine on top of the upper intake. I can tell you it is either a 5.0l 185hp/270ft/lbs or a 5.8L 210hp/310ft/lbs. I can tell you that if you have a manual transmission the engine is a 5.0, simply because Ford didn't have a 5.8L/manual combo. The nut your talking about...is it below the egr or on the manifold?

I have learned that I have a 351. What's a "Windser"?

The critter I'm struggling with is the egr exhaust gas inlet tube. How do I tighten it up at the exhaust manifold? I can get a wrench on it, but have no room to twist the wrench. Is a crows foot the tool I need for this? The dealer wants $128.42 + Tax to replace the tube. I can buy a new one for $46, but I just don't know how to get at it on the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for your help.

Okay, first, There was 3 different 351 motors. The first was a Cleveland. Which is a hi-po small block. It was pretty fast in its time, but had poor oil and coolant circulation. I don't think the cleveland ever came to the pickup. Then there was the Modified, which was run up to 1983. It was considered a Big block because of its big block bolt pattern. It had fair power, and also had a few problems. The last and probably best was the Windsor. It was started in the 70's off and on and was the only available 351 from 1983-1997. A 88 351 has 210hp and 310ft/lbs. Excellent pulling truck.

I don't have an answer yet on the egr problem. I will check it out and post here, if someone else hasn't found it out yet.

Modified???????

Windsor, Cleavland, Midland.
Midland is in the 82 F350 service truck we have. It's a 400CI(6.6l) engine, 351 block.

The modified has different names, but I assure you they are the same engine.

I've heard most common the "modified" but also "Michigan" and "midland"

The 400m is a stroke 351. It has a 4" stroke instead of a 3.5" like the 351's have. It also has a 4" bore. It actually measures to 402.
