Question Air box

I have a few questions about the air box in my 95 w/mass air. First what is the little sensor looking thing with the orange tip that plugs into the top near the fenderwell? Does it need to be there or can it be removed if you modify or replace the box? Second, instead of a K&N FIPK, whay cant you bolt on a K&N conical filter for an 86-93 mustang directly to the mass air. That would cost about $40 instead of $140. I don't want to sound cheap, but that seems like alot of money for what you get. Thanks,

nate: The sensor with the "orange tip" is your air temperature sensor. It needs to be functional, and cannot be removed. Although some people have moved the sensor to trick the computer into false readings. I wouldn't mess with that though.

The problem with just bolting on a conical filter, is that you don't have a "base" plate to bolt the filter to. If you look closely at the Mass Air sensor, it's "base" has a square patter of 4 bolt holes. The K&N FIPK comes with a "base" to bolt up to that, gaskets, the filter, brakets to hang the filter, and a bracket to hold your temp sensor.

I found this on a mustang site. http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/coldairDL.htm
It's a homemade cold air induction with a homemade base to bolt to the mass air sensor. I think it could be done with a strait pipe instead of 90 deg with a cutout for the air temp sensor. Brackets I'm sure could also be made with hardware store parts. Well I'm going to have to go to Lowe's and do some searching. Thanks for the info.
