Question Air box

I have a few questions about the air box in my 95 w/mass air. First what is the little sensor looking thing with the orange tip that plugs into the top near the fenderwell? Does it need to be there or can it be removed if you modify or replace the box? Second, instead of a K&N FIPK, whay cant you bolt on a K&N conical filter for an 86-93 mustang directly to the mass air. That would cost about $40 instead of $140. I don't want to sound cheap, but that seems like alot of money for what you get. Thanks,
