Post Door Noise

Can anyone post information on how to remove the interior door panels on a '91 F-150? I'm getting LOTS of rattling and want to get back there and tighten things up, but not at the expense of breaking my trim.

Also, what parts will break in the removal. I think there's some plastic clips behind the paneling that break easily and will need replacing.

Thanks,

Mike

hi mike! i think i can help.i just had to remove mine about a week ago to replace the power door lock motor.first, remove the screws from up by the vent window and in the recess in the door handle.then, start at alower corner trying to pry out the plastic barb type fasteners.(if some break check with your local lowes they have them in the specialty section)once you have all barbs out push the door lock down.then pull up on the panel while sliding it off of the door handle. careful with the wires if you have power windows & locks.there is a plastic cover behind the panel that you will have to remove to be able to see in the door. be sure to reinstall with duct tape to keep out moisture and noise.
i hope this helps

Thanks for the help! I didn't take the door apart, but did look inside as best I could after removing the screws.

Are these doors noisy in general? Looks like even on a new truck they'd have rattled over bumps. They're not very well-designed for quiet riding over bumps, so I'm not sure if I want to tear things apart if I'm going to be left with door rattles after I'm through.

If things cannot be tightened down, then my only thought is to put some adhesive foam behind the plastic panels so they don't hit the door panel over every bump.

Will have to see how it works. I'll let'cha know, if I go on and do it. I tried prying the panels out with a screwdriver... it looks like it's going to take considerable force or just the right finesse to get them to pop free.

Thumbs up

i had noise in the doors on my '90 f150 a while ago, first of all i had a clip remover for the door trim you slide it over the clips and use it to pull the clips out, what i did was i installed sound deadner for car stereo use, got a roll at wal-mart, and put it behind the pannel, most of my noise was from the pannel being loose, when i reinstalled the pannel i used all new push-clips now it's nice and tight and quiet.

mike, don't pry the pushpins loose with a screwdriver. Use a wide, flat thin pry bar, or a real sturdy putty knife. Slide the tool to find the pushpin, then pry a bit on each side of it, to work it up and out of the hole in the metal. I pry out the pushpins alternately, from one door edge, to the other, back again, etc., rather than prying out all on the same side in a row. Seems to stress the trim panel less. If need be, you can buy more pushpins, what you don't want to do is to rip the pin holder part on the back of the trim panel.
I find the biggest pain is putting the panel back on! Have to get the top hooked over the door ledge just right, while getting the lock button rod through the panel hole!

Mike, A suggestion if you don't want to buy a panel remover is to use a dandelion fork, or a sturdy roast carving fork (don't let the wife catch you). Duct tape over the tines to prevent scratching.
