Dirt Bike Dave, How do you check the catalytic converter. That seems like a good thing to check on my truck as well. I think that I have two of them o my 1996 F150. Thanks -- Martin

MW - you might want to check with an exhaust or muffler shop - I don't know if they can check it without pulling it off. JC Whitney also used to sell 'Catalytic Converter Test Pipes'; basically a straight pipe to fit in place of the Cat. On my mom's old car, we pulled the cat off and opened it up - it was very nearly plugged and completely choking the engine.

Probably should have alot of patience when you replace the filter too. And keep young children and people who are offended by vulgar language away.

Thanks for the help! I will definitely check into the filter. I have located an engine and computer... trying to pin down the wiring harness... Hoping to make this swap to a 351W happen soon... then the supercharger next year.

Will check the fuel filter and cat, though. No need bogging down the Windsor when it goes in...

Mike, one other thing you should check/replace is your fuel filter. On my '93 the filter is located under the driver on the underside in side the frame rail. You will need a special removal tool to get the hose cuplings apart.

Hope this helps,

Question

Just had to get in a question.
Have an 87 flareside w/302 and c-6 tranny. Has 3.08 gears in rear. New motor and rebuilt tranny...Have never towed with it before what should I expect?

About your problem I would pull the codes...possibly egr valve stuck open or catalytic converter clogged. Been there good luck..

A cloged convertor can really slow a motor down. You have a really durable setup a efi 302 and the bulletproof c-6, the problem is, the gearing really high. I think you can pull up to 4k without any problems, but the tranny will shift alot.

Where in Oklahoma do you live?

Question

When I had the tranny redone on the C-6 they added a low stall converter. Will this in any way help ofset the high gearing of the 3.08's ?

Doesn't the low stall add more power at the bottom end?

My dad travel's Oklahoma and Texas once and awile, just curious.

I'm sure a stall helps out a lot. There is a site that can really answer your question(s).

I had a 1990 Lariet std. cab-302 auto. It was the worst of the 5 new F-150's I've owned. I changed the eng. with a slightly cammed rebuild & if anything, it got worse. If you want to go stock, do the MAF conversion first. If not , do a carb-vacume advance distributer & go from there. The early 90's processor won't let them run.

Gear it so that it's turning 3,000 at your cruising MPH.

The reason the truck won't run correctly is because of Speed Density EFI. The computer usually won't allow for any substantual mods to the engine itself, I.e. cam. The Mass air conversion will allow most anything, but in a completely stock configuration, the speed density system is generally better. Massair on a stock engine won't add any hp.
