Question Couple of general questions........

Quick couple of questions for you guys and gals!

1: What is the part that is mounted above the alternator on the 300 cu. in.? It has three 3/4" hoses (vacuum lines?) and two 1/4" hoses running out of it. It seems to be making a noise as if there's a diaghram in it? Any advice or help would be appreciated here!

2: Once I get my oil leak fixed (again) Thursday, can I switch to sythetic oil at 80k miles? Will it make the big six run smoother? Worth the $$? Opinions and facts welcomed here!

And as always, thanks for the help everyone! This is a great board thanks to it's members!

Take care
Neal Coppola

About your mystery part. Does one of those 3/4 inch hoses come from the Air Pump? Other two 3/4 inch hoses go to Anti-backfire check valves, then on to exhaust on engine? If so, it sounds like the Diverter/Bypass air valve assembly for feeding air around for emissions. They have two vacuum-operated diaphram valves in them. Each small vacuum control line can be traced back to an electrical solenoid valve that turns on, off vac to control the air routing. All controlled by the EEC.
If none of the big hoses comes from Air Pump, I can't think of what it could be from the description.

Hey Neal,

From what I've been able to absorb, the synthetic oil may not be a good idea. Heard a lot of people with older engines saying it leaks and wears down seals. I'm not sure the 300 will ever run very smooth, it's not a revving engine (one reason I like it). If you decide to do it, let us know how it goes.

Good Luck.
