Check Engine Light
Well, I'm 2000 miles out of a brand new EGR valve, and the Check Engine light is coming on once again for the first time since.
1991 F-150 with the 302 and automatic.
Any ideas what could be causing this? What are the chances that the EGR valve is at fault again? Last time, the EGR valve was sticking open. What other things cause the CE light to come on?
Thanks,
Mike

By any chance did you replace the sensor? Nailer gave me some insite on this, earlier, hopefully he can help you out too...

If I let my truck idle too long the check engine light will come on...Mechanic told me it was the convertor acting up....

Think most of the the items covered in the thread you referenced don't apply. However, I doubt the EGR sensor itself was replaced. I know the O2 sensor and the PCV valve are original equipment as well. As for the cat, well 70000 miles seems awfully short for a cat to last... My gut feeling is to replace the PCV valve (which I had trouble finding--looks hard to get to) and also the O2 sensor (which needs replacing anyway.)
Went back out for a drive, and no CE light at all... Drove the heck out of the truck. Only stayed on for about 30 seconds earlier tonight...
For having so much low-end push, the 302 sure does wimp out above 35mph... A 13 second 0-60 is so slow... this 302 really runs out quickly...

They probably don't...
The PCV is kinda pain in the butt to get too. ITs under the upper intake, on the passenger valve cover, when the engines warm, reach under there(wear gloves) and pull the hose and the valve out, may be able to get the valve out with out the hose, I usually can't.
If you thought it was bad, try getting the fuel filter off. I have to take my truck to a mechanic with special tools to get the @#$%#$% thing off. Ford really screwed it up. I hear you on the topend slowness. My 89 is SLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOW as a 7-year itch. My 93 on the other hand has a chip and complete dual exhaust-cat back mufflerless, and headers, and it seems to run quickly. Way better than the 89 would think about.

My Check Engine light was coming on under hard acceleration (getting onto the freeway) and I took it the dealer. They replaced both the EGR Valve and the O2 Sensor - haven't had a problem since - gone about 4k miles so far.
I hear you also about the fuel filter, Pastmaster, what saved me from having to go to a mechanic was removing the whole damn filter/bracket from the frame rail via two nuts on the outer side. Then I was able to remove the filter (by clamping it in a vise) and destroying it... then to put the new one in, well......ahhhhh!! Nearly destroyed the new one doing that... you're right, Ford sure screwed up on this one....

Mike L, the EGR sensor is easy to check. On mine it was just a single shaft driven potentiometer. Remove it from EGR valve, pull connector off side, use ohm meter across the two exposed pins. You should see a pretty smooth change on meter as you push in the rod. Can't remember if it increases or decreases as rod goes in, but change should be nice and smooth.
When removing the PCV valve be careful, as there is a stiff plastic vacuum line connected to the top of the vave.
Follow the above link to read out your Key On Engine Off trouble code. It should tell you why your Check Engine light came on. I can't prove it, but I think the light comes on periodically to warn you of service intervals. Get you to bring it in to have the codes checked and spend $$$ on diagnostics.

What code are you getting during a Key On Engine Off test? That will point you in the right area of the Check Engine indication.
Good luck.

Going to have to buy a scanner... May just hold off rather than spend that kind of money on this 302--think I'm going to go ahead and get a performance-rebuilt 351 put in next month...

Mike L., You dont need to get a scanner if you have a EEC-IV system in the truck. My '93 F-150 5.0L has one. Follow this link:
http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html#TESTKOEO
It will show you how to hook up a indicator light to read the "flashes". Also will give you a list of both 2 and 3 digit codes. As a note, on my '93 the use of a "test light" is not necessary....the codes flash out on my dashboard using the Check Engine light, after I install the jumper wire.
Only cost will be a 4 inch piece of wire.
Good Luck, Hope this helps.
