Question 95 F150 Tranny Question

I have a 95 F150(5.8) with a towing package. I was recently towing an aluminum two place snowmobile trailer and noticed that it was searching for a gear running at about 55-60 on flat land(interstate). Is it possible that the tranny is going or do I need a chip that can change the shift points. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just turn OD off when that starts happening. Regular transmission service (fluid & filter change) is essential to their longevity. If you haven't changed the fluid in a while, you might try that first.

Thanks for the info, I have changed the fluid and filter. When I was off the interstate on 2 lane highways, I found that with OD off, it searched for a gear around 45, but it was slightly hilly. Just thought it was odd, since it is a 351 w/towing pckg. Any thoughts would be great.

I can remember my dads 1990 F-150 equipped with a 302/Aod. That was the last of the Aods for us until my 89. It wouldn't go into 1st gear, and hardshifted into later gears. I would say that a chip wouldn't hurt at all, or maybe all you need is a shiftkit. B&M makes a shift kit for $40.

I think I have the same tranny as you do. I also pull, I was having hard shifts with mine. It didn't really search for a gear it would just shift hard when pulling. My brother-in-law is a Ford mech at the local dealership. He informed me that a TSB (I don't know which one)instructed the use of synthetic fluid in the tranny if towing is involved. I had this done and have been pleased with the results.

This may not be the same issue ,but it is a start. BTW I also have the two package.

What rear end ratio do you have? That may be an influencing factor? My folks have 2 chevys a 96 sububan and a 98 c/k. the suburban has a 3:42 LS axle while the c/k has a 3:73 ls axle. There is a VERY noticable difference in shifting points on hills and while pulling. The c/k usually never shifts going up the flint hills here in Kansas but the suburban can't stop.

two package Mike? You may have the 4r100? It was in the last of the previous generations. IF you have sythetic fluid, you would notice hard shifts and cooler fluid correct?
