Question engine ping

Has anyone ever heard their engine start to ping when passing in a higher gear? It sounds like someone tapping on the exhaust for about 3-4 seconds and then it is gone. The motor never loses power that I've noticed. In the lower gears,no ping. The truck just turned 194k.I was planning to rebuild at 200k +/- a few miles. I think that it might be the timing chain having to much slack.I havent checked the timing yet. ANY IDEAS?

I have this same problem when I use 87 octaine. If I use 88 or 89 the problem go away. The citgo stations around here have 87 , 88 , 89 ,91 , 93 gas. So I have tried a few different types. The 88 usually costs $.02 more. My engine used to do it often. But after the few mod's that I have performed I can run 87 with only minor noise infrequently.

I know on my 302, I HAVE to run at least 91 octane for the truck to run correctly, because of the chip, otherwise it will Ping like it came from hell. Nomad, try retarding your timing a bit. Mine is set at 14 BTDC, but you might try 12 or even 10. That should help some.

All of the other suggestions should help, but with that many miles on it, put in a new timing set !!! I would do that first.
Take care,

Nomad,

Excellent. I have been thinking about the pro-street instead of the mileage master. It will be in Jan. that I order mine. I am very interested to see any results that you achieve.

Keep me posted.

A timing chain might effect your pinging? but I doubt it.I would think that the chain strecth would retard your cam slightly not advance it. With that many miles I would tend to think that your engine may just be lugging a little harder because of power loss due to age. Also you may have a carbon build up which my have increased your compression enough to cause pinging under the load. also if your truck is old enough to have a vaccum advance. make sure it is in good shape and not sticking fully advanced. good luck.
