Just purchased this truck. It has a 5.0 engine. What is an average lifespan for this engine.

assuming that the previous owner changed the oil every 3K and you do the same you should see 200K easy.

Cool

Thanks for the info.
I had one in a 79 f150 about 15 years ago.
Get this, I spun a bearing and it was knocking like crazy. A freind of mine drove a chevy p/u and was broke down on the side of the road. That old truck pulled him 10 miles to his house knocking all the way. The next day I started tearing it down.

The 5.0 was in production from 1961?-to 1996. The explorers still use the 302. It is a good engine and it is pretty mighty for a small block. The later years were producing about 200 horsepower.I know a guy from Oklahoma that used his 1993 F-150 as a shuttle car when moving mobile homes. I saw with my own eyes 300,000 miles on the odometer. He claims that all he has ever done to the engine is maintence and replacing the timing chain.

moose1-
What a great engine!!!Hail to the 302!!! I have a '90 f150 4x2 XLT Lariat with the 302. Its got 131,XXX miles on it and it doesn't use not one drop of oil between oil changes (ok, maybe half a quart, maybe...) every 5,000 miles.
One thing I have seen a lot of on this board is people recommending/commenting to change the oil every 3,000 miles. This is excessive unless the vehicle is used in an extremly demanding environment. Those quicky lube shops want you back in there every 3k to get some more change from ya, but with todays quality of oil and engines, every 4-5k is just fine.

Birddogg,

I agree with you. The 302 is one of fords better engines. I'm on my second one. My first one was an 88 5.0 notchback mustang. What a car!!!!!! Now, I'm driving a 96 4by 5.0 and love it too. Granted, it's not as quick as the stang (something about an extra 2K lbs. and 4wheel dr.) but it runs sooo good! And yes, the mods helped.

Chris
