Red face 4.9L Oil leaks?

I've got an oil leak that appears to be coming from an access hatch on the side of the block (runs the length of the block), just below the spark plugs. I would assume that it's a hatch that's used to either view the connecting rods or pushrods. It's not listed or talked about in my Haynes manual. Anybody else have information or experience's with this problem?

I would definitely love to see more posts from the older F-150 crowd. I know we're out there....

What do you mean by hatch? Could it be the head? It might be a bad gasket.I too would like to see more posts from the older F150 truck crowd. Well I see we have the same motor,a real torque monster. Keep me posted on the leak. Good Luck

If you look between the sparkplugs and the distributor and oil dipstick you will see a long(the length of the block and about 3 inches in height) cover or hatch. It has a bolt in the middle every 8? inches or so.

On larger diesel engines(straight six) you would use that kind of an access hatch to look at the pushrods or the crank. I hope this helps a little. I've spoken with Ford and they sell the gasket for $15 and Dicount Auto has a Felpro gasket w/grommets(I guess it uses them for the bolts in the middle of cover) for $17. I'll probably get the Felpro.

I am seriously considering the purchase of a 95 F150 XL Lariat 2 whl drive 5pd manual with the 4.9L V6(bedliner and new tires). The truck appears to be in great shape with only 40,500 miles. The owner is selling because he has two other vehicles and was asking $7500 and has dropped to $6500. This Retails for around 10,500 with the bare essentials.

Is this deal as good as it seems or should I look for something? He did the oil every 5000 miles and has never had any repairs. Said may need brakes in future. All reponses appreciated. Thanks

Todd,
I had the same leak at about 50k miles. Was the only problem that I ever had with the truck! I'm not exactly sure what it's called but I'll look it up on my old receipts later tonight and let you know. Mine was covered under warranty at the time, so a fair price for the gasket would be unknown as would difficulty of repair. I have to run, but I'll get back to you!

Guy buying the truck,
Just do it!!

I know this was posted two months ago and I'm sure has been resolved by now, but for Todd, and anybody else that needs to know, the item in question is called a "pushrod cover", and it is covered in the Haynes manual, on page 2A-4.
Take care,

Have you looked at the "last post" dates before replying to threads? There isn't much point in bringing up threads that have been dead for over 13 years.
