Question

Crash, welcome to the board!

I'm not really sure what you mean by "wheel chop", so let me ask you a few questions.

What size tires/rims is he using? Is the tire rubbing on the inside or is it maybe making contact with the fenderwells? Does this happen only when the steeringwheel is locked one way or the other? Does this happen when the suspension is fully compressed? Are the original bumpstops still in place? See what you can find out so that we can give you a good answer.

Putting on stiffer shocks or a steering stabilizer is only a "patch" job and will not properly correct the problem. If you go ahead and do this, you will more than likely just cause them to prematurely fail.

Question Stiffer shocks

My dad has a 94' F-150, and he wants some stiffer shocks for the front of truck. He has a problem with wheel chop, you can see where the right front tire actually looks chopped. The truck is two wheel drive, would a steering stabilizer help? I know the I-beams travel in an arc, we are not sure which if, either of the options would help. If so, what brand or style? Thanks for any information.

Question

His tires are p235/75r15 Goodyear Wrangler HT. It's just the right front tire, and it is not rubbing anywhere. The truck is 100% stock. I say wheel chop because the outside of the tire looks like one tread block wears one way, the next wears the other. My dad says it sounds like it is thumping going down the road.

Crash,

Sounds to me like your describing what is called cupping. Cupping is where one tread block is worn and the next appears normal.

Cupping can be caused by a few different things. Underinflation, tire out of balance, bent rim, loose or worn tie-rod or steering idler arm. Last but not least, if you havn't changed the shocks on the truck than that could also be the problem as well. It could be that that right front shock has failed.

Since your tire is wearing only on the outside, I'd say that it's probably the alignment or maybe out of balance. If your due for new shocks than go ahead and get 'em.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.
