no before it went out it would sometimes stick in reverse this was the first day i bought this truck and i got home at about 11:30 and wanted to go to bed and the tranny got stuck in reverseand would not come out so i hit it in to nuetral cause the guy that sold me the truck said thats how he got it out but i think i hit it to hard because after that i had no gears and it seemed like it was stuck in the reverse position but i could push it back and forth freely

first step make sure all of your clutch linkage is tight and in place correctly, if so take off the inspection cover of the tranny and inspect your clutch, look for glazing, low friction material and check the gear oil in the tranny as well then get back to me

Check out the tranny oil. Really bad, nasty fluid can cause all sorts of problems, and hard shifting is the most common.

Look on the transmission forum, there's a sticky with tons of info. I know the 5spd took regular mercon ATF, but the older 4spd may still take gear oil.

Either way, swap the fluid if it's nasty and see if that helps. From what you said about the p/o saying you just had to "bang it out of reverse" tells me that there's been a problem for some time, and now something may have let go.

Bent(now broken?) reverse fork maybe? I'm not a whiz with transmissions though.
