93 f150 4.9l code

my 93 f159 4.9l engine missed going down the road the other day. it did it twice in a row going down the road. it happened so fast i didn't see if the check engine light came on. i hooked it up to a scanner the next day and there was a code, i forget what code exactly but the description was a ect/eot out of tolerance. i'm assuming ect is engine cooland temp sensor, right? would this cause it to miss or backfire? i had just left the shop so the engine had not warmed up. i was accelerating in 2nd gear when it happened. i almost hit the steering wheel it was such a hard jerk.

You don't need a scanner to pull pre-'96 codes; a paperclip works fine.

Yes, ECT is engine coolant temp, and it MIGHT cause some slight driveability issues, but not a miss hard enough to throw you into the steering wheel. I'd pull the ABS sensor out of the rear diff & inspect it for metal shavings or damage. If there's anything more than a thin layer of black mud on it, I'd pull the cover off & inspect the gears. Click the black Bronco in my signature & look in the 8.8" Axle album.
