Transfer Case

Transfer Case

Hey!
1991 F150 4x4 302.

Recently my Tcase has been making a whiny noise when I put it in drive while in 2 high. It gets really loud when in 4h. Kind of like a "whiny moan" just long enough to enage in Drive. It doesn't do it while i'm driving though.

Is it dying? How long to I have? and Is it expensive?

it could be dying when did you service it last? what dose it sound like in 4 wheel low? what type of oil are you using in it?

is it a push button shift or do you shift it with a lever on the floor

I didn't try 4 low. It sounds bad in 2h and worse in 4h. I don't do my own work on it, I'm guessing the shop I take it too would have looked at it last service time...
It has a floor shifter.

If it is a good shop they might have checked the level but they wont do a service unless you tell them to. I would make sure it has oil in it and look for leeks, but if that is all fine and it is making that bad of a noise then it will probably need to come out and repaired or rebuilt.

are you sure the noise is coming from the transfer case or could it be the drive shaft or differential?

Ok, rookie question..How do I check the oil level? And what kind of oil does it take if it's low?

There are fill and drain plugs on the rear face of the case. Fill it till the lube is even with the upper (i.e. fill) plug. Considering you're having problems, you might want to drain the case and take a look at what else comes out then refill it. It takes 2 quarts of Mercon ATF so we're not talking about huge sums of money..

Is it possible to disconnect the tcase and turn my truck into a 2wd for now untill I have money to fix it?

That's not really practical. Besides, your problem may not even be in the T-case. It may be in the tranny.

What do you mean by not practical?
I need this truck for work everyday and I'm kinda broke right now.

First you are going to need to find out where the problem is and what it is then you can start figuring out how to ether fix it or jury rig it. drain the oil into a clean container and pore the oil through a coffee filter and see what you get. then let us know and we will try to help you some more. if you have never serviced the trainsmition and differentials this would be a good time to do that also. with a little service work and some PM your truck can be vary dependable but if you neglect it untill you here noises it can be very costly.

Allright my truck is in the next town over so I need to know what tools I need to drain and check the fluid level. When I had a look it looked like a strange opening on the fill/drain hole

Likely a square key.

The standard drive for sockets fits this. Get a regular sized ratchet, and put an extension drive on it. Then stick the square end of it into the bolt and crank it out.

Allright, the fillar plug was stripped but I got it off after yelling at it. The fluid was full and good looking. I'm booking it in the shop as I type this. Time to let some one else deal with it!
