In a 96 if you have a 300 or a 351 you have an E4OD; if you have a 302 it could be either an E4OD or a 4R70W. Look at the vehicle ID sticker on the door jamb. Trans code E = E4OD; U = 4R70W

Why would that be bad? E4OD is a bit "tougher" built and I think rated for more ?torque, but the 4r70w is just fine too. Neither one is "bad". The C5 is the only "bad" transmission to be found in Fords, and that's because it is a French piece 'o crap.

Nothing wrong with the 4R70W unless you're going to add a lot of power to the stock transmission. Do a search in the transmissions forum, there is a lot of good scoop on some common concerns.

I just dont hear much about the 4R70W is all, everyone just talks about the E40D and how good they are so I assumed that I didn't have one that will last. Currently the 302 has a Hypertech programmer added and a drop in K&N filter. I'm not planning on putting a lot more power to it, probably just a Flowmaster exhaust system with Maggie muffler, and a K&N intake. It has enough power for me. I don't really know what else there is to do to it to boost power.

before you do anything else do a flush and filter/fluid change. allot of times this will straiten out any problems. also put a big cooler on it.

This was written by an engineer at Ford. He knows his stuff.
