bucking truck

93 F150 2wd 351 E4OD 3.08 rear

when driving 40-50 mph in drive (OD locked out) the truck "jerks" or "bucks" a little. I don't notice it at higher or lower speeds and it seems to be running ok (getting that awesome 12 mpg ). There are a lot of 40 and 45 speed zones where I live, so I lock out OD often, but I really don't think it is a transmission problem.

I've got a 1995 F150 with the 5.8L and am finding the same, but with the OD left on (not disabled). Right around that 60 km/h mark the truck seems to run a little rough, almost like it is trying to figure out which gear it wants to run in. Tap the gas to get about, say around 65-70 km/h and all is fine. Just thought it was a quirk, but who knows.

Not an answer to your question but why are you locking out the OD in normal driving? You gain absolutely nothing by doing it. You are not improving economy nor are you reducing wear and tear on the tranny.

The only use for the lockout button is when towing or hauling to keep the tranny from hunting at highway speeds when under heavy loads which can hurt it in the long run.

I had a similar issue with my 95 5.0L 2WD 4RW70 Auto. Changing the plugs and wires seemed to solve the problem.

You're only hurting your fuel economy by locking out OD in normal driving. The tranny tends to shift into OD whenever possible to reduce RPM's and save you a few drops of gas. Your transmission has shifted many thousands of times in it's life, locking out OD to save a few isn't going to help in the big picture.

Sometimes I'll push the OD OFF button while going downhill to get a little engine braking, other than that I only bother with it when towing the double sled trailer or the boat.

When I am using the cruise on the highway, I will lock out the od when I get to a hilly section, because it will downshift and floor it to get up the hill if i don't. In town I lock out OD so the tranny stays in third gear, instead of going in and out.

The plugs and wires are new, and so is the TPS.

I really need to either sell the truck (and get hosed) and get a 3/4 ton

or
change the rear axle (or gears) for more torque and add airbags in the rear for towing my Jeep.

I really hate working on this truck, but it has served me well. I work on trucks all day (big trucks), and this thing is like a bad college roommate (slobbers, drinks a lot, looks like crap).

I will keep an eye on my truck and see if anything gets worse, I will also try driving around with the OD on and see how much of a difference that will make with mileage.

Mine did this also - Changed the plugs, wires, and dist. cap. Problem solved. All of these had been replaced about 25k prior, so they should have still been good...

I will check these this weekend, it will be going in for the famous oil pan replacement since it is now dripping like a faucet.
