Help! boiling enigine

Hi everyone,

My name is Bas, i live in the Netherlands and i have recently bought a 1995 F-150.
I am running into some troubles now and since these cars are pretty scares here in Europe, its difficult to find experts on these cars!
I have been following this forum for some time now and i thought it would be wise to join up and ask the people who are from the same background as my car!

Problem # 1
When bought the car, the cooling water temperature stayed very low, so i started to replace the thermostat, but there was none! I've put a new one in and now the temp is fine..... Untill i shut the engine off, within a few seconds the water starts squirting out through the filler cap and overflow container in an increasing volume.
Just as if somewhere inside it starts to boil and the steam blows the water out.

problem # 2
When i put the automatic into drive, the engine makes a lot of revs when i drive away. When i put it in 2 or 1 it drives away normal. Reverse is normal also. would it if i change the fluid and filter, or is there more going on?

If anyone can help me with either of these two problems, i would realy appreciate it!
A few days ago i bought a manual on cd on eBay, it should arrive within about a week or so.

Kind regards,

Bas.

P.S. i tried to attach a picture, but it seems i am not alowwed....

It sounds like you have a bad radiator cap. replace it with a 15 lbs cap and I think you will be OK.

for the other you need to pull the codes and see what is going on. it could be your TPS or some thing simple like that.

What engine do you have?

It sounds like you installed the thermostat backward. The spring should go toward the engine, & the point toward the radiator. If you slip the upper hose off, you should be able to look inside to check.

Also, be sure you have the correct mix of antifreeze & water.

What transmission does your truck have? If you don't know, post the TRANS code from the door sticker. Have the fluid & filter ever been changed? Is the shift lever on the steering column loose?

Upload your pictures to SuperMotors. It's free, and it provides the text needed to embed images in posts, like this BBS allows.

Add your truck's specifics (year, engine, trim level, 2/4WD, etc.) to your profile & your signature so we can give you better answers.

Thanks Bruce and Steve!

I'll check the radiatorcap and thermostat positioning tomorrow.
I doubt the fluid and filter have ever been changed, considdering the state of maintenance the truck was in when i bought it...

And what is a TPS?? (Temporarily Problem Supplier?)

Not yet imbedded, i'll get in to that later.

On the image page, you'll see 4 text fields at the top L. Click inside the one called "THUMB" and it will all be selected. Hit CTRL+C, then come here, put the cursor in the Message field, & hit CTRL+V to drop that text into your post, like this:

TPS is throttle position sensor.

Today i have checked the thermostat, i was positioned the right way... Although i noticed the little hole was at the bottom, so i have turned it 180 degrees. The radiator cap is marked 13 lbs, so i think i'll start looking for a heavier one.

Since my manual hasn't arrived yet, i'll ask it here: When you refill the engine with coolant, should you let air out somewhere or just start the engine and top it off a few times?

I didn't check things with the tranny yet, hope to get to that next weekend!

Kind regards,

Bas.

dont forget to top off the over flow tank to the line. just start the engine and top it off a few times after the thermostat opens Rev engine to about 1500 rpms for a minuet then let it idle then shut it off and wait for it to cool then open the cap and top off. use distilled water if you can and good coolent. check it again a couple times the first day you drive it?

Rev the engine BEFORE the thermostat opens to fill the heater core & drive all the air out of it.

Steve is right you need to do it before and after it opens. the 4.9 will form a air lock in the upper radiator hose and the water wont circulate until you run it up in rpm for a little bit. this is because the hose is higher than the top of the radiator and it must push the air down hill. but once it is full it stays just fine as long as you dont let your over flow get below the min.
