Poping/Clicking when turning

Good Morning All,

My wife's truck, 1997, f250 heavy duty, crew cab, shorty, 7.3L PSD, is making an audible clunk/pop/click when it makes right hand turns, but it comes from the font left of the vehicle. It is a single clunk according to me, a click according to the wife, and a pop according to a friend. Maybe it's a thunk?

Anyway, does anyone have any idea what this is?

Thanks for any help

Is it 4WD? Does it have automatic hub locks? How old are the brakes? How long since the wheel bearings were serviced? Have you checked the tie rod ends & ball joints? Or the suspension bushings? Have you read the TSB about frame noise? If not, click my signature, scroll to the bottom of the album list, & look under TSBs & FSAs.

My 94 F150 is making the same noise...and same wheel.
I recently had the upper ball joints replaced...and the noise started right after i had them done..so now i'm thinking the lowers need replacing too.
It's a clunk sound when i turn and accelerate.

Mine started that last night, and today I replaced both radios arm bushings and it is quiet again. but I'm going to need an alignment now.

Is it 4WD?

No

Does it have automatic hub locks?

N/A

How old are the brakes?

As old as the truck, just the pads are new within the year.

How long since the wheel bearings were serviced?

I have not serviced them, so I will say they have not.

Have you checked the tie rod ends & ball joints?

To do this, i just jack her up and see if the tire moves when I pull on the top or bottom right?

Or the suspension bushings?

What do I look for?

Have you read the TSB about frame noise?

Yes, will be looking into this as well.

Thanks again.

just get under there and look carefully at everything. Steve's website has a very good step by step on the cross member service bulletin. also it would be a good idea to service the wheel bearings. and that is a good opportunity to check the hubs.

Checking the tire for movement at 12:00 & 6:00 is how you check the ball joints. 3:00 & 9:00 checks the tie rods. But if the wheel bearings are loose/worn, you'll have movement in all directions, AND the brakes will wear unevenly, and the pedal will be soft.

You need to start with good, thorough maintenance. Get a Haynes manual & do everything in Ch.1. Then see what problems you still have.

Just an update on this issue. It is now fixed. It is fortunate too, it was a safety issue.

Because the truck was a northern truck for two years of its life it had some rot on the suspension brackets. Those brackets were slowly falling apart. The knocking was the passenger side bracket holding the 4x2 front suspension just under the passenger seat. It was rotted through, and the popping noise was the brace popping back and forth. Since it needed to be addressed, and the brackets were rivited I had to take it to the stealership, and they got quite a pretty penny out of me.

Fortunate thing is the pop is now gone, and peace of mind knowing all suspension brackets are new.

If it's a 4x4...sounds like the cv axles/wheel hubs connection.

I had this happen on a Toyo 4x4...same thing...clunk! ugh, it was awful sounding...but only when I turned.

Replacing the cv axle fixed it..the right one just wasn't seating in properly because one was broken.
