mystery engine problem.... help

Alright, I've done the suggestions given already, but heres what I have. A 92 f-150 with a 5.0. When i'm driving it at first it would stumble under hard acceleration, or when climbing a hill with a loss of power. after changing the O2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap, cleaned the fuel system, which helped a bit, but now the problem is getting worse, now when driving the check engine light will come on and then the engine will start pinging badly, you can hear lifter chatter, then it will clear up as suddenly, the light goes off. when it's a cold day, like today mid 30's to 40's it won't do that, it will just stumble occasionally but won't light up the light, or chatter. I'm better with carbs guys, any other suggestions.

The only time I've had an engine pinging and chattering, it was overheating.
Could it be the thermostat siezing up (causing the ping/knock), then suddenly opening and cooling the heads?
How's the coolant level?

Also, if the Check Engine Light came on, there should be a code.

Haven't had a chance to go get he codes pulled, my reader broke, and the cooling system is fine, cooling just fine. That was my first thought as well, but no problems there.

Sounds silly but computers do run the cars... I have had the relays cause similar issues except for the knocking part...

Get a brand new paperclip & read this thread.

Then get a Haynes manual & stop throwing part$ at the truck - that's the most expen$ive & least effective way to fix it.

As to the symptoms you're describing; read this caption & see what you think:
