ZF Trans in 4x4 F150?

I did a search and couldn't find any "how to's". Is it possible to put a ZF trans in a 1995 F150 4x4 which currently has the Mazda 5-speed?

What type of labor and mods are we talkin' about?

From what i've read, it's pretty much a bolt in. The trans crossmember needs to be modified but that's about it. I've heard both that the driveshaft lengths are OK and that they have to be altered. Don't know which is true.

Yup, most of the work is already done as you got the pedals, and hydro system setup.

Ford put them in - you shouldn't have much trouble. There are several writeups on FSB.

I am getting ready to do this exact swap. it looks like an easy one but that is not always the case. I don't know yet about witch clutch presser plate and flywheel to use in this swap and if the drive shaft Yorks are the same. but drive shaft work is easy.

I am assuming that I must use the presser plate and flywheel out of the 300 I6 because they are not externally balanced but may need to change the clutch disk if the front splines are deferent. but since I learned a long time ago not to assume anything I will throughly check this out before I make a move

and don't forget to check the pilot bearing. there is nothing worse than finishing up a Job like this and taking out for a test drive only to find out that the pilot is to big and the trany binds up or the clutch vibrates like crazy.

Use the flywheel & clutch parts to match your engine. If the trans has a smallblock bellhousing, it'll work with any smallblock.

The pilot is the same for all smallblock ZFs - they didn't build anything different on the trans itself between smallblock engine applications.

The front output is always the same yoke. The rear output could be a fixed yoke if the t-case came from an older Bronco ('87-90?). Later Broncos got a fixed companion flange. All pickup 1356s got a slip yoke on the back. But ALL '80-96 t-cases will swap onto ALL '80-96 4WD transmissions, and it's not hard to rebuild a slip-yoke t-case into a fixed yoke or flange, if you have the parts.

I just did this swap last month in my 93 F-150 4x4 4.9 LB, just make sure you get a trans with a small block bell housing or the trans will not match up, all I had to do on the total conversation was, torch out one hole in the cross member, so the tail section of the trans bracket could be bolted down, also on your year model you will need a ZF trans with internal slave cyl, I think some early ZF's had external slaves, change your "Fly wheel" too, and pilot bearing there is no clutch adjustment with internal slave, so if your fly wheel is warn, you will not have a full clutch pedal.I can't post pictures so here's a link to my photobucket with some pic. http://s1282.beta.photobucket.com

I'm doing a 302 to 351 swap in my 95 f150 as I'm typing. I'm using the m5od for now. Through research I found people saying they had to do a 3 inch body lift to accomadate for the taller transmission and make a new hole in the floor further back b cause the shifter is in a new location. Other people said they had to do mods to tunnel or floor to fit it without the lift. By the way does any one know if the maf 302 harness will work on the speed density 351w.
