hooking up a tach

I just purchased a sunpro tach to hook up in my truck. Im not the best when it comes to electronics so bear with me. The black wires is obviously the ground and I can do that no problem.

The red is power but what should I splice into cause I dont want a constant power, I just want power when the truck is running, correct?

The White wire is for it to light up, where should I run that wire to?

And finally the green wire goes to the negative wire on the coil I believe. Just run this wire threw the firewall and splice it into that wire?

My truck is a 87 I6 auto. Thanks!

All the wires you need are in the instrument cluster connectors, because the factory tach uses them, and the wires are always there, whether the tach is installed or not.

Bk -> Bk or Bk/Y
R -> R/Y
Wh -> LB/R
Gn -> DG/Y

When i hooked up the tach in my 85, i just used fuse taps and went straight into the fuse panel. i got a test light and found a power source that was only on when the key was on and tapped into that. for the lighting, i went into the fuse that controls the dash lights and the tach dims with everything else. i did not have a factory tach. hope this helps.

i ran the red to a fuse in box, the white was spliced to my lights behind heat/ac controls and the green to the coil negative which color is in instructions per model. hope this helps!!!

I just found the wires to splice into out of the big bunch of wires near the drivers side kickpanel. Spliced into the wires Steve83 said, except for the one that hooks up to the coil I ran that one through the firewall. Its hooked up and workin great, thanks everyone!

Oh yea, it idles in park around 800..in drive around 600. And shifts under full throttle at around 3600. Does that sound right?
