94 F350 project

I got this truck for 500 due to a blown head gasket. it's a 94 F350 4X4 Crew Cab with a stock 351W. I think this block is in pretty good shape for a rebuild. Currently I'm only in the planning stages. What has really been throwing me off is the fact that it's EFI. I would like to stroke the motor out to a 408, with a low-mid range cam, minor head work, headers, NO AIR PUMP. I want a really strong low-mid motor, not a high reving one. If I do this type work and leave the computer alone, will I starve the engine? With my truck is it only chip swapping, or can you plug in a module and program things the way you want them? What about simply swapping injectors? Will this help? Or do I also need to extend the injector pulse? Can you adjust the injector pulse? I understand what a computer could control on an engine, I just don't know what all mine does control and what is left up to old mechanical/vacum controls(talking about timimg there).

Most likely the easiest way to go about it would be a custom burned chip. Depending on your cam choice you might survive with the stock injectors. There are computers you could get to work that allow some self tuning, but it would involve a lot of work, and then the self tuning isn't nearly as easy as it would seem.

As far as the timing issue, shift points, and just about anything else you could have those adjusted with the chip. Easier to use the existing rather than change it in most cases.

If it was me, I would give Troyer a call. Chances are if anyone has data for a stroked 351 it would be him. Since he can burn the chip you'll kill two birds with one stone.

My apologies for being one of the people hijacking your other thread.

Thanks signmaster. How would I go about getting in touch with troyer?

You can also just post questions in the chips and programmers section here.

I met Mike and his wife at one of the F150online rallys they had that happened to meet right down the road from me. Within minutes he was talking about molecular sheer, timing curves, and other such things.

He's done a lot of truck tuning, and he's a data hound.

I know you want to rid the engine of emissions stuff, is there anything else that you don't want to computer to control?

As far as I know Mike can program for almost any variable you have. If you go to larger injectors, he can alter the injector pulsewidth. Same with the tranny. Once you have a good idea of desired shift points (possibly lower than normal if you build a torquer type engine) then he can set them, along with the timing curve.

Without data from a wideband O2 he (or any other tuner) won't be able to give you a perfect chip, but if you want to fine tune it you can do some dyno pulls and give him the fuel curves and such. From what I've seen Mike does a great job of providing a very good and safe tune out of the box.

What it boils down to is I am considering building a 408 stroker for this heavy-*** 4x4 F350, I'm not looking for 9 second quarter times, just the ability to sling the mud off some 36"+ swampers, pull this big bastard up a sugar sand hill and not burn up half way through!!! I just want the injection system to do the same job as a 650 CFM Carb!!! I can get a holley carb, and an edlebrock intake for about the same as a set of injectors, and the cheapest chip summit sells(and I don't even know if it would be enough) I'm afraid if I spend all this time and money building this motor, and have inadequate fuel I'll run it too lean and burn it up

I really appreciate your help and advice, I'll Write troyer and see what they have to say.

Nice to see your dong it right, Ive seen so many guys just go ahead without planning it out and end up ruining the engine.

I have a very similar truck to yours. My project is also similar. It's 96 F350 4x4 with a 351 and a stick. I paid $400. Mine is a regular cab though. I plan on running 37s.
My 351 is sick, I haven't took it out yet to check it but I am hoping its gong to be ok for a rebuild. I'm not quite ready to start on it yet, but I am looking forward to seeing what you do.

Cool, I haven't started yet either, I'm still sorting everything out parts and funding wise. Send me an email @ n_brinson@netzero.net and I will send you some stuff as I get it.

Ok, I'll shoot you an email this weekend. I'll try to snap a pic of the truck tomorrow and email it.
