Fan clutch replacement 4.9
Fan clutch replacement 4.9
Hello all. I have a '95 F-150 4.9 that needs the fan clutch replaced. It's the threaded fan clutch. First of all, the heads of the fasteners that hold the pulley to the water pump and the heads of the fasteners that hold the fan to the back of the fan clutch are real close to each other and seem to be in the way of the big nut that holds the fan clutch to the water pump.
How do I get a wrench on that big nut to remove the fan clutch with all those bolt heads in the way?
I have the Haynes and it states that 2 special Ford tools, a fan clutch pulley holding tool and a fan clutch nut wrench, are required to remove the fan clutch.
Any way around this?

You can buy aftermarket wrenches, or you can build your own. If you have an old lawnmower blade or leaf spring, & a hacksaw, & a bench vise, & strong arms, go for it. Otherwise, swing by Sears or follow a Snap-On/Mac/Matco/Cornwell tool truck until it stops.
I just did this on my 94 F150 with the 4.9l. I bought the tool, $13.99 at Tool Liquidaters I also saw it at Napa for $20.00. It is a thin but strong thing. I held the pully in place with BIG locking pliers I have.
When you put the tool on that big nut you will be turning it counter clockwise when you are facing the water pump.
That damn tool made all the difference!
