engine/transmission removal
engine/transmission removal
Hey guys Im usually in the lightning forums but I am also the proud owner of a 93' F-150. Unfortunatly both the engine and transmission are shot and need to be replaced. While I can afford the new parts, the labor is whats going to get me, so Im gonna try to do it myself. My question is are there any tips, hints, tricks, or whatever that can make this easier. I own several hand tools and have fooled around with this kinda stuff before just never with this type of truck. Any help would be appreciated.
Buy a pair of decent 2-ton (or higher) jack stands & a small rolling floor jack. Sam's Club sometimes sells a kit for under $100, but shop around.
Get a few short chains from a pawn shop or 2nd-hand store. If you can't find any, just buy some 1/4" chain & threaded links form a hardware store. I'd get a 3' section & maybe a shorter one. Use them to hook onto the exhaust manifolds to lift the engine/trans like this. Use a decent ratchet strap to control the tilt.

Since you're obviously not rushing, get EVERYTHING disconnected & drained before you rent the hoist. That way, you can be sure to return it the same day. If you can get the replacement engine & trans ready beforehand, you might even be able to reinstall them at the same time if you rent it on Fri & return it on Mon. If you've done this before & have all the tools, it's possible to do it in one day.

Then you can take your time reconnecting everything.

i've found it has been easier for me to take the whole front clip off(fenders, front valence, etc.) it gives you a lot more room to work. if you just take off the front valence you can pull the tranny and engine as one, you can do it without but it's a real bugger, also I saw a 2ton floor jack and jackstand kit at wal-mart cheap, I don't remember how much but it was under $50

Ive pulled a few engines and trannys on early 80 truck and broncos. make sure everything is disconnected and marked.
depending on where you live, there are places that rent cherry pickers. simply connect to the engine and lift it out. a load leveler is great but the ratchet strap also works.
before you start, wash the engine and trans the best you can. it makes things go alot easier.

x 1,000 ! ! !
I can't believe I forgot THAT! :o
do you have a/c??? you would have r-12...very $$$$ i worked around mine when i pulled my 302 out of my f150 so i had to leave the ps pump and compressor in the engine bay and work around it ..and the condenser too. kinda sucked but it beat calling a mobile a/c company out to my house to evac the r12.

i almost forgot..call around to your local uhauls they sell out the engine hoists every couple of years you might get lucky and get one cheap. i got one at the uhaul for $50 !!! and it works great
You don't have to work around the A/C system if it's in the way. The entire system can be removed/installed without opening it or losing any refrigerant. Lay the radiator back to get the condenser core out, & split the box beside the R exhaust manifold to get the evaporator core. Then unbolt the compressor & lift the whole mess off the truck. No problem.
