Tach

I have a 92 flareside and the tach at idle reads around 2400 rpm. I know it is not idling this fast because I was driving to work when it messed up. Has anyone else had this problem before? I also have a broken odometer button. Can you replace these or should I just replace the entire cluster?

The tach is bad, and it can be replaced independently.

The odo button is part of the PSOM (speedo), and it can also be replaced indpendently, but you'd have to get the mileage reset professionally, or just accept whatever mileage a used PSOM has.

Considering the cost of new parts, you'd probably be better off with a good used tach cluster, and you MUST use a '92-93 if you swap it complete. '94-96 have slightly different wiring, which CAN be modified, but it's more work. But you can buy a '92-96 tach cluster & just swap the tach & PSOM into your '92 cluster, and they'll work fine.

For more info about the PSOM, read this thread.

If you can't find a cluster locally, e-mail me. I have a '94 for $80+sh.

You might also be interested in adding a low-fuel light.

The odo button is not part of the PSOM, it is spring-loaded and has an arm that goes over and pushes on a small switch on the PSOM. I just looked at my spare that I have the PSOM out of right now.

Thanks for the input. Do you know if a lightning cluster will fit? I know that it has a different spedometer range, but can the speed sensor be swapped out to make it work right?

Question

I have this same problem w/ a 92 model... It has started working again recently, but goes back and forth... Truck has 134k on it...

I am confused though... Can I find a tach from a wrecking yard, or does the entire guauge cluster have to be replaced?

My fuel guage also reads off, but I suspect that is a part of the sender in the tank...

Have you looked at how the button is attached? It can't be removed from the face of the PSOM, and the face is VERY difficult to remove from the PC board (I've done it). So even though we both know it's technically not, I'm still saying: the button is an integral part of the PSOM.

If you can find a '93 Lightning cluster, it will swap straight in. A '94-95 will need some electrical mods to work right, but you CAN swap any Lightning PSOM into any '92-96 cluster. You don't have to change anything else, but you will need to recalibrate the PSOM.

You only need a new tach, but most JYs won't sell the tach alone - they only sell complete clusters.

You'd only need a whole cluster if your truck was NOT originally equipped with a tach. The cluster case is different.

Yes I have, I just took a cluster all apart today and the button is not part of the PSOM.
A Photo of a PSOM.

The button is an integral part of the cover of the Speedometer head.

To get the Speedometer head off after the plugs are unplugged on the back just take out the nine screws on the front and lift off the covers.
Then take out the two screws that hold the transmission indicator on and after that just pry up on the two gauges sets at the ends and they unplug.
You can then lift out the Speedometer head with the PSOM on it and unplug the odometer.
Unplug the Speedometer head from the PSOM and plug your PSOM into a new Speedometer head and put it back together.
I found nothing difficult about it and you do not have to touch the PC Board.

I got an entire cluster off of ebay, but it is a 4x4 model and mine is a 4x2. I would prefer just to swap the tach, but that looks somewhat involved.

1. Can I just remove the tach and swap it with mine? How? Do I remove things from the top out?

2. If I swap the entire cluster, will there be a problem with the 4x4 vs 4x2 difference? I think there is a 4x4 light on mine, but it obviously doesn't do anything...

Thanks,
Jim

4x4 light isn't in the cluster, it's in the little information strips under the cluster.

Thanks for all the help. I removed the tach from the eBay cluster and swaped it w/ mine. So far so good... The "new" tach seems to be working. Mine would work part of the time, so I only hope this one will work long term.

I did find out the truck will not start w/out the fuel tank switch connected...
