Thinking of an extended cab F150...any suggestions?
Hey guys. I am looking for any year under 97 of the F150 extended cab, as I have a Jeep right now, which is great, but would rather have a truck. My dad has an 88 F150 with the bulletproof 300 in it, but his is only a single cab.
Any suggestions of what engine and tranny? How about long or short bed? I would prefer a manual over an auto, as I find them less fun to drive. Gas mileage isn't a real issue for me, as good gas mileage to me is 12 or above. I would rather have an extended cab because I think they look cooler, and I can put more people in them. Also, my price range depends on whether or not I can make payments to the dealer or not. If I can, I don't care how much, but if I can't, I can't go over $5500. That, of course, depends on the condition of the truck, and the dealer.
Thanks for any suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Not to thread hijack, but I am in the market for a pre-97 extended cab too. I am looking for something to tow my drag race car to the track, and for those trips to lowe's/home depot/etc. I am also looking to stay in the $5-6K range.
What are some of the problem areas to look for when we go check one out??

Well, like looking for any rig, make sure you look at the frame! If it is rusty as hell, do not buy, or talk the price down. Check for fluid leaks, of course. If you are going to get a 4X4, make sure it works. Make sure it shifts real nice (manual or auto), as I have heard that the auto's on the straight 6's can go real fast. Make sure the gauges work properly. Check the fuses, too.
As far as problems go, you will most likely encounter those after a while of driving the vehicle. I didn't know that my front end was going bad until I put my Jeep in 4WD.
Alright, so, my update is that I found a single cab long box with a straight 6 and a 4 speed, or, a single cab short box with a 5 speed (still straight 6). I prefer manual over automatic. I know how good the 6 is, as my dads has the 6 in his, and my jeep as the inline 6.
The 4 speed is going for $1960. I am not sure how much the 5 speed is going for. Lucky for me, however, my dads ex-coworker, and best friend works at the lot with the 4 speed. I am going to see if on Friday, I can go see about making a deal.
There is also a 79 F250 going for 4 grand right here in town, which is in superb condition. It is a little spendy, which is why I don't really plan on purchasing it, but it has a tool box and a ladder rack already in the back, which was going to be some mods I do to a truck for my job (apprentice carpenter). Anyway, I will keep this updated. Hopefully, I can make payments, as I still need to go Christmas shopping for family, the lady friend, and a couple of buddies.

I would love your truck, however, I live in Montana, and I imagine that you would want a high amount of money for a truck in that good of condition.

UPDATE!
My dad found a truck! 87 F-150 extended cab long box. They want $3250 for it, so I am going to take a look next Friday, and see about financing it, since I am going to be building a house in the spring, and need the extra money. I'll be able to keep my Jeep, too, so I am pretty stoked.

It had a 302 with an auto. The head gasket looked like it was gone, and was leaking oil profusely, and the tranny was so bad, I couldn't stand it. It wouldn't stay in high gear, even when I manually put it in high gear. It was in immaculate condition other then those two things. I know the head gasket isn't too expensive, just a PITA, but the tranny would have cost me in the long run.
There is a 92 Ranger sitting down at the place my dad bought his 88 150 from, and his 72 Bronco, and my 87 Waggy, so I'll be going down there to make a deal next Monday.
Csonka,
That is one sweet-looking F150! When I got mine a couple years ago, I was looking for the ext cab, but the deal on this reg cab short bed was just too good to pass up. We do a lot of camping, towing a Jayco Kiwi 23B, and if we bring the kids, we need to take 2 vehicles, which is a drag! Man, your F150 just looks great!
Good Luck!

My '95 has same wheels, same exhaust, but is a 4x4. Mine is the bronze top and rocker panels with gold in between, but not NEARLY that clean.

Thanks for all of your compliments. It is becoming harder and harder to maintain this vehicle. The past two PA winters really took its tole on the body and frame. I am undergoing a whole new project to make sure this truck will last. Be sure to check out the site at www.thetruckproject.com
