Cost to replce engine in 1990 F150 4x4
Hi guys. Just looking for a few quick relpies and some ballpark figures. I just bought a used 1990 f150 w/ a 302 and about 120k miles. Now I find out that at idle after the engine is warm there is no oil pressure and a knock can be heard, so it looks like I may be needing a new engine. IF I DO need to replace it, how much should I expect to pay to have this engine replaced by a pro with a rebuilt one? I have never had anything like this done, so I just want some average figures so I don't get ripped off too bad! Thanks a lot in advance for your thoughts!
A reman 5.0L can range from $600-1500 depending on what you want. Labor could be 6-20 hours depending on how the shop prices it. Labor rates can be $40-110/hr depending on the type & location of the shop. So I'd put the total anywhere from $900-4000.
But I saw a nice '97 EDIS (Explorer) 5.0L at a junkyard last week for ~$600. Where are you?

Where are you? I just pulled a good 302 out of mine, and it's heading for the junkyard, unless someone takes it. The engine has not been opened up. I left everything (except the valve covers) on the motor, including the water pump, the oil pan, and the exhaust and intake manifolds. It might cost around $500 to get it into your truck, unless you do it yourself. If you or anyone else here is interested, please let me know right away, and I'll call the shop and have them hold it.
I'll tell the story again, even though it is painful:
I was itching for more power, and waiting for the slightest excuse to need a new engine. Sure enough, I began to notice the familiar ticking sound that indicates a bad lifter. I had a couple of friends check it out, and they confirmed it was the sound of a bad lifter. I was stoked. I lined up some $$ to make the purchase, and then just before I pulled the trigger, I discovered that it was a loose spark plug. There was absolutely no problem with the engine, except for a slight leak in the rear main seal. By then I was completely hooked on this new engine, which I had struck a great deal on. So I bought it anyway. It has been an unbearably painful process. The company that built the engine put the wrong heads on it, and fought me for 3 weeks before sending me a new set. Then, it took the installer 4 weeks to do the job! I just got the truck back yesterday, and I still haven't driven it, because my headers don't work with my y pipe (y pipe ended up being 2 1/8"), and so I had it towed to an exhaust shop where I am having the y pipe modded tomorrow. I should get my first test drive by tomorrow night.
Moral of the story is that I was asking for trouble, and I got it. I just hope that it all pays off with the performance I was hoping for.
As for the old engine, I will talk to the mechanic tomorrow, and ask him to hold it for one of you guys. I really would like to see it go to someone who could use it.

Thanks for the replies and engine offers, guys, but I'll find one locally. Looking like it's gonna run me around 1800 at least from the quotes I have so far. For something really good I'm looking at 3200. I think the truck is worth saving, I just needed to hear a good price range so I wouldn't get cheated. Thanks again!
