Charging system woes

For awhile my truck would charge normally except when RPM's got too high, and occasionally when sitting at idle. Regular cruising voltage would maintain at about 13.5V, sitting at idle or rpm's too high voltage would drop to about 12V. Not a big problem for me, but now the voltage needle is holding between N and O on the gauge. I have an alternator on order, should be here tomorrow. Just curious as to what you guys think is sounds like is wrong. Alternator or voltage regulator? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Loren

On a 94 i believe the voltage regulator is built in to the alternator.

I went and bought a new voltage regulator, and yes they are on the alternator, but they can be removed. It is on the back of the alternator. Anyways, just as I was going to remove the alternator to replace the regulator, UPS showed up with my brand new alternator, so I just put that in. I think I'll have the old alternator inspected/rebuilt and unload it on eBay.
