How are the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, and tire psi? 4x4's will never be known for mileage and also depends on the gear ratio you are running as well. As far as towing weight, really can't help you there.

I'd love to get 14 mpg in my truck!

Your maximum trailer weight depends on the rear gears and cab type. If your F-150 is a regular cab, it goes like this:
Gears/Max Trailer Weight
2.73 / 2100 lbs.
3.08 / 2300 lbs.
3.31 / 2900 lbs.
3.55 / 3600 lbs.

With a super cab, the weights are 5-15% lower.

I get between 9 and 11 mpg, depending on how hard I drive, and how much weight is in the bed. In all fairness, though, I drive my truck hard. Other than what's already been mentioned (fresh tune, tires at max air pressure, etc.), the only other factor you can easily control is your right foot. Some people claim much better mileage, but I've been ASE Certified for 20 years, and I don't think I've ever gotten better than 12 or 13 mpg, and that was trying very hard for a brief period of time. There will be outside factors, like type of driving, rear gears, climate, elevation, etc., but the bottom line is the 4.9L has never gotten noteworthy gas mileage. It was built for torque, not CAFE numbers.

Really? On all-highway driving with no cargo/towing, I'll get around 17mpg. Average is around 14.5 mixed highway/town. On a full front tank, I'll easily get 240 miles, and another 20 or so if I really risk it.

I didn't really notice any drop at all towing a half ton load at all. In fact, I barely even noticed it behind me.

It's not even so much the axle in standards that limits(while it does play a part), the madza tranny and vanilla-flavor clutch just aren't built for loads. If you plan to do towing with the truck(regularly more than a ton) then I'd replace the clutch with a heavy-duty variety and if possible get the 3.55 gears in back, you'll burn through the stock clutch in no time.
