You will definitely want an h or an x pipe to get the most power out of the exhaust. I don't know if anyone makes one for that truck or not but i am in the middle of fabricating a custom exhaust for my 77 F-150 and i am just welding a short piece of 1 3/4" exhaust pipe between the duel 3" pipes. An exhaust shop should be able to do that for you pretty cheap if you don't have welding equipment.

FYI:
To locate the best spot to add that piece of pipe, draw a line on the 3" pipe with a crayon, and take a hot lap around the block. When you get back, inspect the 3" pipe, and where the crayon mark stops melting is the prime spot.

Thanks pkrwud, awesome tip.

Greg, you can buy weld in o2 sensor bungs if your new headers don't already have them try summit or jegs. The air pipe i think connects into the cat, if your getting rid of the cats get then rid of the air pump as well.

That air pipe just pumps oxygen into the catalytic convertor, i don't know why the mac h pipe would have the air line still going into the pipe. I would just cut all that off (you wouldn't want to plug it) It might make a pulsing sound sometimes, but its not too noticable, my f-150 was like that for years after the air pipe rusted apart. You can also buy an idler pulley to allow you to remove the whole air injection system right from the truck. It will free up a couple extra horsepower too. That all depends on what kind of emissions inspection you need to pass in your state though.

yah... I'd go the easy route and pull it all off and get a shorty belt...

I'm gonna keep the cats on it so he can pass... Hooker LTs, super 40s and true duals is gonna be ****in loud...

1 more question...

anyone know of a good place to buy piping? or what piping I should use?

hooker makes a kit avail @ summit but it looks like its made for shorties...

thanks for all the help so far

ok coupl of things to add first off is that little air pipe you cannot just cover up. It is called an egr. The good news is you can get rid of it. Go to www.fordfuelinjection.com and get their egr removal kit thing it is a 20 dollar sensor that plugs into the comp to say that the egr is closed and if you dont do that then your truck is gonna idle like crap. second is go to a maidas they actually have a bunch of exhaust pipe their for really cheap just go in and ask to buy some exhaust tubing.

cool...

what about that O2 sensor... his truck only has one...

does it matter if its only in the one pipe... I dont wanna fab an H

and I think he'll need the EGR to pass inspection... so I don't wanna pull that... he's keeping the cats... so same question... is it ok if the air line only goes into one cat?

or will I have to connect the 2 pipes?

If possible I want to run straight pipe to collector to muff and dump out the side behind the cab...

It's not the egr, it's a fresh air pump system, the egr goes into the manifolds. They're talking about the tube that goes into the cat. I just let my hang, it doesn't hurt anything, I'd like to take the airpump off when I get some time to free up a few ponies though.

About the O2 sensor, the stock downpiping from the manifolds has a H pipe type of thing with the O2 sensor in it. For mine I just cut right in front of it and welded on duals. I scrapped my cats though because we don't have emmision testing here. Besides cat's are junk.

If you're going to keep the cats, you need to keep the smog pump or they won't function properly.

No... they should work fine...
He has 2 cats now (after the Y pipe) and only 1 has the airline...

my main question is if the pic in my previous post will be ok...

In order for both cats to work properly, they each need a line feeding them from the smog pump. The drivers side cat will be more likely to clog without one.
