New to F150, have some questions....

I just got what I believe is a great deal on a 93 F150 XL. Has the I6 and E40D trans, 116K miles body decent, and a cap and liner for $650! The only problem was the rear shackles were broke. I bought the shackles only to find the hangers were going so I picked those up as well. In the tear down process, the tank started to leak, so that is getting replaced as well. I have done TONS of searches here and it has answered most of the questions I have, but there are a few I would like to throw out there....
First, I have a 3.9L Dakota right now that I use to pull my ATVs. Problem is any hills in the road and the dakota turns in to a dog. Some hills in southern OH and in WV will keep me to a max of 35mph with the pedal to the floor. With no weight the truck is great....SO.. Can I expect more out of the F150 with the 300 6, the auto trans, and the 3.08 rear axle that it has? The total wieght loaded I am guessing is only 1000lbs, but it kills the dodge. I wish the ford had lower gearing, but till the work is done in the rear, I can't test it out, just hoping you guys could prepare me for what to expect.
Second thing I noticed is a little hesitaion when you first hit the pedal, I know its a little hard for you to guess without seeing the truck run, but is there any known things to look for on the 300?
Last, there is a coolant lind that runs of the heater hoses back to the radiator and in just under the cap, as soon as I start the truck, coolant is running back in from that hose, and the water in the radiator gets hot fast, too early for the thermostat to open, so I am guessing maybe its stuck open? The guy I bought it from said it has a new water pump, I can't tell as the truck sat a little while and there is some rust.

Your truck should pull that load just fine, even with the 3.08s. To fix the hesitation, I'd do a basic tune up (plugs, wires, cap, filters) and Seafoam (do a search for it on here)

5000 with 3.08s might slow ya down, but all ya gotta know is that the 300 is the best damn motor ford ever engineered and God only knows the higher power that came down to design it. Some oil, water, and gas WILL get you home.

Welcome to the site!

I've got a '95 F-150 that only has 2.73 gears in it. Before I acquired it my dad used to drive it. He's pulled a trailer and bed full of lawnmowers and such and you'd never know it was back there. We've also driven it with such a load of concrete or wood in the back that the front wheels were barely on the ground and the 300 pulls it with no trouble at all.

Now my truck is a 5-spd, so you'd have to compare the total gear ratio, not just the final drive, but my first bet says you'll be just fine. As has already been stated, the 300 is a fine engine. It doesn't make a ton of horsepower, but it makes a ton of torque down low where you need it for pulling. You're gonna like love it.

Awsome guys, can't wait to get it on the road..... I am working on the rear leaf springs now. I have the old hangers out and the bottom 3/4 of the shackles, but I can't get the bolts out of the rear of the leaf spring. There are frozen solid in the bushings.... any tips here? I have the nut off, but thats all I can get. I am beating on the bolt and it won't budge....

Well I got the new hangers in, the new tank in and the bolts/metal part of bushing out so far. I am gonna try and take the bushing to work and get the old bolts out and hope I can get them back in the rubber part. I just wanna reuse for now, since I think I will also be getting new leaf springs in the near future. As far as getting them out, I ended up getting on of my large jaw pullers on there and pushed the insides out with that! That saved the day, every hammer, lube and torch here would not budge them.
Thanks for the help guys!

I have pretty much the same truck as you, except mine's a standard. I have that hesitation right off idle also. I put a bottle of gumout cleaner through and it definetly helped, but it seemed to come right back as soon as the tank was gone and I filled up again.

Is it true you have to replace the fuel filter after running Seafoam? I've heard varied yes/no answers on this.
