Angry Rear end

I have a 1990 f150 4x4 with a 351 and I am asking about any suggestions about what may be wrong with the rear end. When sitting on jack stands both rear axles will move .25 to .50 of an inch in and out. What may be causing that? I think that the c-clips on the axles might have wear? And what rear end is in the truck? Sterling?:

Ford 8.8, deff not a Sterling. I agree with checking the C-clips.

Check the tag on the rear end under a cover bolt.
If it has 8.8 were the 10.25 is in the diagram it is an 8.8.
If it has L were the dot is in the 3.55 it is LS.
Tag diagram below.

If this is an 8.8:
I would say that would be about normal endplay.
The C-clips will not ware but the pinion pin may.
If this is an LS and then if the clutch packs ware you can have more endplay.
