New Guy Says Hello

Just wanted to say hello all.
Just bought a 1995 F-150 short bed 4 by 4 and happened to stumble apon the site so i had to join and say hello.

Truck Specs:

1995 Dark Blue F-150 Shortbed 4 by 4 with 302 5.0L and Warn manuel hubs AOD trans. 83K on the odometer bought off of an old man for $2500.

Truck runs great no problems in the frist 100 miles.

Was looking for a little advice on what to do with it?
I've been told to check the K&N airbox and to upgrade the exhaust and to get a chip but was looking for some real word advice on what really works and what to do as far as mantainence ect. any ideas or insite would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks gang

David James

Howdy and welcome with your good deal! I'm a sucker for a 4x4 shortbox...

No AOD tranny past '93. You could have either the heavy duty E4OD (trans code E on the door jam sticker and 20 pan bolts) or the lighter duty 4R70w (trans code U and 14 pan bolts. It matters which is which for the type of fluid you need to put in. Which I reccomend flushing.

Other basic stuff is an oilchange with a motorcraft filter. I find the least messy way is to stuff some rags above the front diff and let the fliter drop down to a verticle position and then lift straight up.

Also the fluid on your Borg Warner 1356 is pretty simple to change. Mercon ATF works just fine. Bout two quarts.

Undo the fill plug first incase you strip it out and your not stranded with an empty tcase.

I replaced the stupid square hole aluminum junk with some brass pipe plugs from home depot to make it easy next time.

If yours are stripped like mine were on the '88 bronc, you can take a scrap of steel stock and grind it down to pound in. Heck, I'll sell ya the custom made plug removal unit for a sweetheart of a deal....

Spend the money on the Motorcraft plugs gapped to maybe 47 or 50 if you want some more milage. Also spend the money on the Motorcraft plug wires. I feel for the cap and rotor that the discount parts stores are fine though.

Fuel filter most def, especially if it hasn't been done before. Mounted on the drivers side frame rail you need a 10dollar X shaped line tool to undo the fittings. Your fuel pump will thank you if it is clogged.

Some other guys on here are better with hoppin up you 302 and look for their suggestions shortly.

i've determined that my trans is a 4R70w " U" you had mentioned that the two tranys take different fluids?
Which do u recommend i use?

Picked up a fuel filter and changed the oil already

my main ? is on the four wheel drive

i have warn manuel hubs and im not sure on the proper proceders on usage? I no not to drive on dry pavement ect but not sure on if im supposed to be in nuetral when engaging the 4 by action? is the procedure the same when going back to 2 wheel drive? I heard that your supposed to back up after disengaging ???

Manual hubs are super easy. Lock when you want 4x4, unlock when you don't. No need to fool around with backing up like auto hubs.

For the transfer case, either manual or electric, you can go between 2wd and 4x4: in gear, in neutral, stopped, or moving. For low range you must be stopped and for the electric shift 4x4 you must also be in neutral and on the brake.

The 4R70w tranny uses Mercon V fluid.
