My New 95 F150 42K 5.8 2WD HELP!!
My New 95 F150 42K 5.8 2WD HELP!!
I just bought a ...
1995
F150 MarkIII XLT
5.8 - 351 Engine
Auto Trans
42K Original Miles
2WD
Tow PKG-Loaded
2 Owner vehicle - 1 owner for 8+ years, No Michigan Winters
Truck is mint- No dirt on carpets, no rust, no cracks in leather or dash
I bought the truck for $5K thinking that I would rather have an older vehicle w/ low miles than a newer truck with a 150k on it already. I bought it to pull my boat which is a 17ft alum boat so it is not really that heavy. So can anyone help me with the problems I am having. I am in college so I dont have a lot of money to put in the truck but I have to get it running right. Thank You All for you help!!!
1. There is a ticking noise at idle and when driving on the road when I let off from the gas I can hear it ticking. Does not go away! I have been told it is a lifter? Plugs have been changed, oil changed.
2. When I bought the truck it had a b&m electronic shift controller installed. Which is supposed to make "firmer shifts". Well when test driving it, it shifted pretty hard, so I figured I could just take the shift controller off and it would be fine. So off it went and the shifts are still very hard! Every gear hits hard weather towing, up hill ,down hill, fast, slow. Doesnt matter the thing gives you wiplash when shifting. When at idle and shift into reverse it makes a loud clunk and jolts very hard.
3. LAST PROBLEM! Idles rough. When I start the truck the rpms shoot up to around 1500. Then drop to 1000 and down to around 800. When I put it in gear it shifts really hard and the rpms drop even more and it surges like it wants to stall and then goes back up. So it idles high while in park and then too low while in gear.
The last owner took it to Goodyear who hooked it up to their computer and this is what they did/said about the truck.
Replaced 8 spark plugs
Replaced EGR Valve
Checked...
Valve lifters making noise
Low Engine Vacume 10" @ idle
Idle Vacume needs to be 15-18"
Engine Compression 129psi on all 8
Cranking Vacume only 1" Needs to be 3"-5" Steady
Engine Cam timing may be off
No vacume leaks other than EGR Found
He paid $325 for this!
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I dont even know where to start. I didnt think a vehicle with 42K Miles could have these issues, but I have to fix them I guess. Thank you in advance!

Well lets see it has hydraulic roller lifters wich have been known to go 300k with no problems. Possible streached timing chain . Hook up timeing light and look at timeing markand watch for movement up and down at idle. if its steady good set at 10 btdc. thats a start that dont cost nothing if you got a light.
