Fuel Guage Problem

I have a 96 F-150 with the 300 six with the duel tanks. When the front tank is selected the fuel guage is buried way past the full mark regardless of the amount of fuel in the front tank. The rear tank seems to be reading o.k. It sounds like a bad ground??? Anyone else had this type of problem before I start messing with it.

You are headed in the right direction. When the tank is full, the resistance on the sender is "high" about 160 ohms. Empty is about 16 ohms. If the sender is unplugged, or the wire is cut, the reading would be infinite, causing the gauge to go past the full mark.

Past full = bad sender, have to drop the tank.

On E = bad connection either at the sender or the back of the cluster.

Thanks!!! I will get under and check it out. I was hoping not to drop one of the tanks. If thats the case, I may get around to fixing it one day.

My front tank was reading empty ever since I bought the truck, and I assumed it was a tank pull to fix it, so I just got used to watching the trip odo. However, one day, I unintentionally ran the tank bone dry (engine sputtered), and didn't fill it for a few days until the other tank was ready. When I filled it, the guage worked! Is there a float in there that could be cracked?
