95 300 I6, performance chips? yes/no?
95 300 I6, performance chips? yes/no?
I have a 95 300 I6 4x4 with 92K miles on it. I'm figuring out that 15 MPG's isn't too bad for this truck, but i'm lacking power in fifth gear and especially in the wind and even small hills. Wind blows 20-25 MPH everyday here on average. I have a 3" lift and 33's. I know that lifting and bigger tires slow things down some. But this much? I have a Flowmaster and poweraide throttlebody spacer. works pretty good. Has anyone used speed calibrators or chips for the I6? Any suggestions would be great!
As far as a speed calibrator, you dont need one you can reprogram for different gears and tire sizes through the cluster by grounding the dealer mode enable wire under the glovebox. I don't remember the exact procedure but search for it there are instructions on the internet somewhere.
I looked into getting a chip for my I6 but at that time none was available so i would have to mail my ecm to superchips to burn a custom chip, i think they have quite a few chips available now for the different ecms but i cant tell you whether or not they are worth the money since i never got mine done.

I very highly recommend first installing a K&N FIPK, part #57-2503. If you still want more after that, get a JET Module, part #85904. Those both made an amazing improvement for my truck, especially when it comes to long uphill grades! Where I once had to downshift into 3rd to make it, I can now make it in 5th, no problem.
