School me on engines

So I may be looking for a new truck. It'll be late model; no doubt. Something from the 90s. I know all about the I6 as I have one now. Which V8 engines are desirable and which ones are not? Thanks

Looks like 4.9 is best (no surprise) then probably the 5.0 followed by the 5.8.

Should have searched first. Don't tell the boys in GD

I had an '87 with a 302, a '95 with a 300 and I currently drive an '88 with a 351.

The six is bulletproof, but I love my 351.

302 has no guts

I love 351W, stay away from 351M's, i've had several, and i have one right now they have all had rod knocks, although they will run that way for a long time. I'm going to pull mine apart next week and see whats up, i'm going to make some oiling modifications to it and hopefully it will turn into a decent engine.

Having both the 302s and 351s, I would go with the 302 and the M5OD. Now my grandfathers 94 302 E4OD is just as fast as the 92, but it is MAF and only 35K miles. If you want a 351 in a half ton you're stuck with the E4OD. F-2/350s could have the ZF behind every engine and the 351 or 460 would still be a strong choice. Of course you can't argue with a 7.3L IDI for reliability and a 7.3L Powerstroke for straight up power.
