302 Timing

Hey guys. I was wondering if there is anyway we can turn the timing up or which deg of timing is optimal for the 302. anyone that can give me some help would be greatly appreciated

The best timing setting you will hear from most people form a stock 302 is about 11.5-12 degrees TDC. With the HEI ignition upgrade it will run much better with the timinig at about 13.5-14 degress.

thanks man i have my mustang turned up at 14 deg but i run 93 in it.... the HEI ignition upgrade????

Yea, the ignition upgrade for the 302 that includes high performance wires, coil, cap and rotor, and regular orange box Autolite plugs gapped to 0.055".

Trial and error. Start at 12, and if it doesn't ping, bump it up to 14. If it still doesn't ping, leave it there. If it does, back it down until it doesn't.

If you have a vacuum gauge, you can use it to set your timing, too. Advance it to get the max vacuum, and then back it off until the vacuum drops 1". Test it and make sure it doesn't ping under load.
