88 F150/302 timing

Hey guys.

Im trying to adjust the timing on my truck and after a little research I learned it's supposed to be at 10 degrees btdc. Does that "B" mean before?. The timing marks go from 10-0-10-20-30. Right now it is at about 24 and it's idling alittle rough/lacking alittle power. I'm not the most adept person at mechanic work so i need to clarify WHICH 10 I need to set timing at.

Thanks.

ok i figured it out. it runs better set at about 12 than it did with ten. when i plugged the spout shorting bar back in it jumped to about 18 at idle and it advanced fine with acceleration.

Yes the B means before. You want the motor to fire 10 degrees before the pistons reach top dead center.

It might run even better at 14, but 12 is usually a happy spot. Your description of events after reinstalling the spout connector sounds right on the money. You're good to go.

BUT

If you are subject to emission testing, set the base timing to 10 degrees advanced prior to testing, otherwise they'll fail it.
