Who knows AOD's well?
Who knows AOD's well?
A friend of mine back east is starting a project, and had some questions regarding the AOD tranny. I told him I'd see what I could find out. Here's the email he sent me. Any input is greatly appreciated.
I was wondering if you know what year 4x4 trucks came with an AOD with a selectable (electronic) overdrive that doesn't need a computer. What I want to do Chris is drop a 302 in my 89 Toy 4x4. The Toy's are electronically shifted and they have a button for an overdrive. I want to keep the Toyota shifter and use the Ford tranmission. On the Toyota shifter, it goes 1-2-D and then a button for overdrive. I don't want to use a custom shifter or buy one of those B&M shifters.
One more thing, what is the best year for the truck AOD's? I know the AOD's had rear oiling issues but I think they fixed that in 91 and up but I'm not sure. So basically I want to use a mild 302, AOD and a Ford transfer case.

The button OD de-select is a feature on the E4OD not the AOD.
The correct year is going to be a problem. The early E4ODs had some issues and need to be upgraded to 95 specs. The 92 up F150s have the diff mounted VSS so there's no speedo input or vehicle speed input to the PCM unless he uses the Ford axle.
The problem is that 302/E4OD combinations are not that easy to find, most 302s used the smaller tranny. All 351s come with the E4OD.

The AOD is completely mechanical and shifted by a mechanical linkagee and TV cable to the throttle body. The shifter is PRN(D)D1, where in (D) gears 1 - 4 are used, in D gears 1-3 are used, and 1 locks in first. Years are 85 to maybe 91.
The E4OD (89 to 98) is the tranny with the OD lockout switch that while in (D) keeps the trans from shifting into 4th.

Your friend may be looking for an AOD-E/4R70W.
