Unhappy spedo stoped working, shifts hard too

spedometer stoped working all of a sudden and the overdrive indicator light keeps flashing on and off. every other gauge on the dash works ok, the trannie was just serviced 3 days ago. could somthing be wrong with the transmission or is it somthing eletrical with the spedo ?

The OD indicator flashing indicates a transmission problem, the hard shifting reinforces that, the fact that you just had it serviced makes it morr so.

When my tranny took a dive, the position sensor went first, which lead to some very funbky shifting to say the least, I seem to recall the speedo acting hayball a bit as well.

Could be something as simple as a loose connector, I'd be getting in touch with the shop who did the service ASAP.

You've lost the signal to the computer from the VSS and the drive for the speedo at the same time. Loss of the VSS puts the tranny (via the computer) into a limp mode that will give very harsh shifts.

I'd guese either the speedo drive gear on the VSS or the gear in the tranny has gone south.

Since the OD light is flashing, have your OBDII codes pulled and look for tranny related codes.

On a 96 the VSS is in the diff, there is no drive gear on the tranny. Not sure how the tranny shop managed to bugger up the wiring to the diff though. Check the connector at the top front of the diff, see if it's connected or if they unplugged it for some reason. The other solutions are not a quick fix.

Yup, what he said. The root sensor for all your problems is the VSS system.

SHO, 92-96 trucks do not have a mechanical cable like the 97-98s. The VSS does everything like the 99+ trucks.
