there is a solenoid bolted just below and in front of the ignition coil that has 2 vac lines going to it. one line is hooked up to the vac source and the other runs off to somewhere i forgot. i tested this assembly and it's not holding vac. what is this solenoid? and is it supposed to hold vac?
would this be a source for a higher idle vac leak?

yup that's it. i'll have to do further testing tomorrow. it seems that with all of the lines connected (source to solenoid line AND solenoid to EGR) it seem like it's leaking from the solenoid. but both vac lines were tested to hold vacuum. the EGR was also tested with the line and it also holds vac.
possible that this solenoid can go bad?
thanks.

Sure. If it won't block vacuum when it's de-energized, it will cause the EGR valve to open and allow EGR flow when it's not supposed to.
The unwanted EGR flow will present itself with the same symptoms as a vacuum leak.
Looks like you found your culprit.

32bucks at from ford. The one in the pic is from the 92 bronc when it went bad last year. Had a horrible miss and EGR codes like crazy. Swapped it out with the one from the 88 and all was well so I knew it was the problem and bought a new one. What do ya know over spring break the same thing went bad on the 88's and had to buy another.
