What is the best oil and oil filter to use???

I have a 92 F150 4.9 5 spd. I never really tow anything. The truck ahs 100k miles and runs absolutley perfect. I live in Texas where it is hot. I was just wodnering what kind of stuff you guys were using and what was best. On my first oil change I used Valvoline high mileage oil and a Motorcraft FL 1A filter. Is that good? Also is that the right PN for the filter? I got it for free with the truck. Let me know thanks

100k? Thats great, it's just getting broken in!

Do a search on Oil or Filters and you will get a million opinions/answers.

I had the same question for awhile. I worked part time at an oil change in Lubbock while getting an engineering degree and did some informal research. Everytime we had a geezer come in to the oil change with 150k plus miles I would ask their opinion. They ALWAYS used a major national brand like Castrol, Penzoil, Vavoline, Quaker State, etc and they ALWAYS changed the oil at 3000 miles or 4 times a year, whichever came FIRST. Mobil 1 was mentioned also but it didn't get mentioned much more often than the others.

Also, keep in mind that although the manufacturer may reccomend 5-6k between oil changes these days, how often could they sell a new car if the engines on the old ones were all lasting 200k miles?

Enjoy the search.

Motorcraft filters are primo. Wix and Purolayor are also good; other brands less so.

On an older high-mileage engine, I'd avoid switching to synthetics, too much chance of creating a leak. Stick with the dino and Valvoline is as good as any

Stick with Motorcraft filters, especially with a 4.9L. Otherwise, you'll wake up the neighbors when you start the engine in the morning.

You might get a kick out of this. I have always trusted Purolator filters, and never had any drainback issues with them. About 4 months ago, I changed the oil and filter in my 4.9L, and felt rich I guess, so I picked up a Pure One oil filter. I figured it was Purolator's best, and the fancy blue paint was worth the price alone. For the next week, every morning my engine sounded like a diesel starting up because the oil drained back. I finally went and bought a regular $1.50 Purolator filter, and swapped it on, and the problem went away.

Why would Purolators best filter fail like that? Have you had any similar experiences with the Pure One filters? Curious.

Take care,
~Chris

OK.. I put in my two cents.. I stick with Purolator or Motorcraft filters after having someone at work send me this link to a page where this guy cut open every filter he could get his hands on to see what the real difference was. The Purolator and Motorcraft were given the highest recommendations because they used more "quality" parts within the filter assemblies (basically the ORANGE brand is full of CardBoard inside the thing). The recommended brands used heavy plastic/rubber and/or real metal internals. I'm looking like crazy for this link. I'll post it up when I find it. I have used Purolater Pure One filters and had the exact same thing occur as PKRWUD.
I tend to go with the Motorcraft units the most.

You are using as good a filter and oil as possible. Stick with it!

I use wix oil filters and valvoline oil. I get the oil and filter discounted because i work at a parts plus warehouse in SLC, UT. If i didnt work there i would go find a motorcraft filter. But i heard that wix filters are among the best from the teacher when i had my autoclass in highschool last year. So i stick with the wix.

Personaly i would go with a synthetic oil, but any engine over 75k will have a leaking problem becayse its used to the old sticky oil, if you can aford to top of with synthetic oil, i would go with that no dout in my mind! And for air filter, what ever you decide, my buddies got a 9' cylinder K+N, it sounds amazing! Lets a good amount of air in, but its about 60 bux.

wix 51515. Can't believe I remember the part number, as I haven't worked auto parts in 10 years!

We had a display thing that showed the "guts" of the filters. Wix had better quality overall than most. Purolator and Motorcraft came close, but Fram was absolute crap!
