Looking to get a F150

im looking to get a 93-96 F150 single cab 4x4 xlt with an auto trans. its basically just a beater truck i do not want to spend more the 3500 for it i will be taking it in the woods alot. i have a few questions, as far engine choices i understand that 300 inline 6 is near industructable and i do like that but if i cant find one with an auto (because mostly all have sticks and thats what i have now and i dont want another) compare the 302 V8 with the inline 6 in the reliablility dept and the gas mileage dept. and also i did not go look at anything yet what are some key factors that i should look for in these models to make sure the truck is good and not a POS
please advise

first I'd say not to get a 96-- they are the newer computer system, harder to mod if you're into that sort of thing, harder to work on yourself. As far as I know no benefits.

as to the 302 vs the 300, I have never owned a 4x4 but I expect that the 300 would be better suited to a 4x4 than the 302. 300 has more low-end torque which is good in a 4x4. Reliability wise they are both excellent-- 300 being a little bit higher but not much. Gas mileage is about the same. As to what to look for, I can't think of anything specific to this truck.

You can buy a C6 automatic transmission for around $1k, so if the truck's cheap enough it's something to consider.
