How to get drivers door to shut better.

Well just from over time the drivers door does not latch as well and you have to hold it in to get it to shut completely. The passengers door was rarely used and shuts fien but the drivers was used much more. What can I do to get it to shut easier?

I'd start with just the bushings. Extremely easy-- 5 minutes or less. When you open the door , look at the back of the doorsill about halfway up. There's a little post that sticks out that the latch grabs onto. There's a piece of rubber that goes around that post. That is the bushing. Take a look at it, compare it to the passenger side to see if there is a difference (the passenger side apparently being better). If there is a difference you just need to unscrew that post and put a new bushing on.

you can buy those for under $5. The only problem I had is that I didn't have a star headed socket so I had to but one which doubled my repair bill--- still came in under $10 though and less than 5 minutes. Easiest car repair ever!

I wouldn't bother with the pin unless the bushing doesn't solve the issue.

Alright well I bought the bushings, and it shuts a lil better but not prefect. There was actually no bushing left on the drivers side LOL. Anyway I got the bushings and put a slit in it and slid ot over the post and reinstalled the post be screwing it abck in. Is that correct?

It shuts better but I still have to hold my hand against the door while shuting it. Do I need to buy a whole new post? will that help it?

Did you inspect the hinges? Sounds like you may have one worn out...

I really did not look at the hinges, but was just making sure that the bushing was supposed to have a slit in it to slide over the post?

I will have to doublecheck, but I know on my old Taurus there was NO slit. I just unscrewed the post, slipped the bushing over the post, screwed the post back in.

I cant belive you bought the bushing without the post,

I didn't know they sold them like that...

anyway I didn't have a torque screwdriver for mine either SO I just used channellock pliers to unscrew them and install the new ones....

I'm like you I have replaced mine and the door is OK but not like it should.

I have never thought about the hindge pins.

thanks

anything else ?

I spent more time with it and got it to close near perfect. I had to reposition to entire striker plate so it caught perfect, and it shuts very nicely, not like new, but hey its 14 years old. Much better than before with no bushign at all.

Good Info. Is taking the door off a 1 man job? I thought I could use an assist from something at the base of the door to keep it from falling
